What can I say....

Jens!

What an incredible video, and for such a worthy cause. You amaze me with your talents and creative abilities.

I think you picked me to be on this project because:

I am really old and still playing

you have known me since you were a kid

I have a Bass Trumpet and you don't

my "Arban's" method book is older and in worse shape than yours!

However my friend, I am thrilled and honoured to be a part of this with Matt, Steve, Mike, and some of my favourite Canadian and American Trumpet players. Getting to hear some of the rest of the world's players was a real treat. Great tune, great arrangement Matt!

I think I'd better go practice now - stay safe!

There is another word that is just as important. " Listen". We need to really listen to ourselves. Are we blending with the other players in our section? How is our pitch? Are we a bit sharp? A bit flat? Are we giving the lead player the support he or she needs to make our section sound great? Are we so embroiled in the reading of that charts that we forget to listen? Sometimes when I hear some people play, they seem to have turned off their ears. They seem to be interested only in how they sound and how prominent they are in the band. We are a team when we play music together. We need to listen to each other carefully . Focusing on the time, the phrasing, the pitch, and the dynamics. Important word "Listen".
Al Muirheadtag:www.almuirhead.com,2005:Post/56156622019-01-10T15:30:00-07:002022-05-09T04:30:58-06:00Undertones hits #16 at JazzWeek.com
Really lovely to see how people are embracing the new album.
by BRIAN ZIMMERMAN

Northern Adventures - The Canada Sessions Vol. 1 (4 of 5 Stars)

Al Muirhead is a bright light on the Canadian jazz scene, a JUNO-nominated trumpeter with 26 albums to his name and a roster of sideman gigs that includes stints with Dizzy Gillespie and Diana Krall. Long a supportive player, he released his debut album in North America in 2014—at age 80. Northern Adventures—The Canada Sessions Vol. 1 (Chronograph Records; 57:58) is his second album in two years, and it brings together fellow luminaries of Canadian jazz for an intimate program of jazz standards. Listeners will find themselves luxuriating in Muirhead’s deep, mellifluous tone, which at times conveys the warm, downy timbre of a trombone, especially in the lower register. That’s nowhere more evident than on “Love Me Or Leave Me,” on which the trumpeter unspools fluttering ribbons of bottom-heavy bop. Muirhead and vocalist Laila Biali entwine sweetly on the ballad “The Nearness Of You.” The song is an airy, stripped-down marvel, and its serene weightlessness nearly sets it afloat.

Originally from Regina, Al has been a Calgarian since the 1960s – running a music store, working in television, writing, arranging, teaching and, with his wife Ida, raising a family. Now in his 80s, the past 2 and a half years have been something of a renaissance for Al Muirhead jazz trumpeter with the rapid-fire release of 3 albums in 3 years featuring Al as leader – all on Calgary’s Chronograph Records. The first, was 2014’s It’s About Time – the title a reference to it being Al’s first recording as a leader after something like 70 years as professional musician. It was nominated for a JUNO Award. Oop! (2016) featured Al in the company of P.J. Perry and Tommy Banks. The most recent, Northern Adventures: The Canada Sessions Volume 1 was just released this month.

CD Review - Ted Quinlan (TheWholeNote.com)" data-link-label="" data-link-type="url" href="http://www.thewholenote.com/index.php/booksrecords2/listening-room/26064-oop-al-muirhead-tommy-banks-pj-perry" target="_blank">Oop! CD Review - Ted Quinlan (TheWholeNote.com)

Oop! - Al Muirhead; Tommy Banks; PJ Perry
Chronograph Records CR045 (www.chronographrecords.com)

Oop! by Calgary-based trumpeter Al Muirhead exemplifies the reasons that the American songbook continues to inspire jazz musicians some eight decades after many of its tunes were originally written. Accompanied by iconic musicians PJ Perry on alto saxophone and Tommy Banks on piano, Muirhead virtually owns the compositions presented here and embodies the approaches that are essential to getting deeply inside this time-honoured material. All three of these musicians (as well as percussionist Rogerio Boccato who guests on Black Orpheus) possess a longstanding connection to this music and play it in the most natural way possible.

Miles Davis’ The Theme (based on the chord changes to Gershwin’s I Got Rhythm) opens the album with Muirhead and Perry playing the line in harmony over Banks’ relentlessly swinging piano. Perry, one of the world’s finest exponents of the bebop tradition, solos brilliantly followed by Muirhead who exhibits impeccable taste and tone in his relaxed, melodic delivery. Tommy Banks plays one perfect chorus of unaccompanied piano, demonstrating his blues-infused bop style. Rhythm changes, as we refer to tunes based on the classics, are a test piece for jazz musicians and The Theme firmly establishes the impressive credentials of these players.

The ballad medley is a testament to the deceptively simple art of playing a melody beautifully. Alfred Newman’s Street Scene, featured in the overture of How To Marry A Millionaire, and an uncharacteristically languid reading of Mean To Me, are pleasant surprises from this superb trio of seasoned pros.

- Ted Quinlan (TheWholeNote.com)
Al Muirheadtag:www.almuirhead.com,2005:Post/42846212016-06-01T08:45:00-06:002020-04-11T14:53:07-06:00Oop! #5 on Canadian Jazz Radio for Month of May
!earshot charts - may 2016 - top 20 jazz

Our neighbors to the north have produced many musicians we have eventually become familiar with, Oscar Peterson being the most well known. But trumpet ace Al Muirhead is very well known among fellow Canadian musicians especially on the studio scene where he has appeared on a multitude of albums many by A-list artists. The easily recognized reed master P.J. Perry is probably the most recognizable to Cadence readers and life-long friend Tommy Banks mans the piano bench. The principal's clear, ringing tones are heard on eleven tracks many of which are salutes to trumpet kings (Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown and Miles Davis). The title number and “Ida Mae” are both from Muirhead's pen and while not especially memorable serve as good blowing vehicles. With eight decades in his pocket,
it is heartening to see veteran players receiving some well-deserved exposure while they are still here to enjoy it. - Larry Hollis
Al Muirheadtag:www.almuirhead.com,2005:Post/41646802016-05-03T15:00:00-06:002020-04-11T14:54:12-06:00Breakout West Nomination
Found out today that I was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award for Jazz Artist of the Year!

Such a whirlwind of nominations, I'm overwhelmed by the response to my music! The other half is the part people play while others are playing something they never played with anyone who played that part. So if you play the wrong part, its right. If you play the right part, it might be right if you play it wrong enough. But if you play it too right, it's wrong.

Interviewer: I don't understand.

Yogi: Anyone who understands Jazz knows that you can't understand it. If I understood it, I wouldn't know anything about it.

Interviewer: Are there any great Jazz players alive today?

Yogi: No. All the great Jazz players alive today are dead. Except for the ones that are still alive. But so many of them are dead, that the ones that are still alive are dying to be like the ones that are dead.

Interviewer: What is syncopation?

Yogi: That's when the note that you should hear now happens either before or after you hear it. In Jazz, you don't hear notes when they happen because that would be some other type of music. Other types of music can be Jazz, but only if they're the same as something different from those other kinds.

Interviewer: Now I really don't understand.

Yogi: I haven't taught you enough for you to not understand Jazz that well.
Al Muirheadtag:www.almuirhead.com,2005:Post/40322902015-10-05T22:00:00-06:002020-06-08T20:56:47-06:00Thank you for the 80th Birthday Celebration
Thank you to all my friends and family who came out to celebrate my 80th Birthday at the Ironwood Sunday. Everything came so easily to them. However, they didn't spend the necessary time on their horn to become a really good strong player. Talent just opens up the door. After that you have to work just as hard as the less talented.

A well organized practice routine is vital to a trumpet players growth.

How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Sometimes we put the blinders on, or close our ears to styles of music that may not be our favourite to play or listen to. It's been my experience that you can learn a lot from these experiences, and if you are going to make a living in the music business, more doors will be open to you.

Also, as a trumpet player, no matter what genre of music you play, take lessons from the best Classical Trumpet player in your area - learn the fundamentals.
Al Muirheadtag:www.almuirhead.com,2005:Post/35927152015-03-11T17:48:20-06:002020-04-11T15:08:39-06:00Trumpet Tips #1: Trumpet books every aspiring trumpet player needs to have in their library.
Welcome to my Trumpet Tips!

I thought I would out start out easy with my first trumpet tip and give a short list of trumpet books every aspiring trumpet player should have!

My personal favourites:

1. Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet
2. Clarke Studies
3.
